Why I Am in College
Why
I Am in College
Going
to college is the dream of every student who wants to further his or her
education after successfully graduating from high school. College education gives
one the upper hand in specializing in his or her dream career thus increasing
the chances of reaping economic opportunities in life. Some student are quite
luck because after graduating from high school they land in a good job.
However, majority cannot get a job because the job market is very competitive
and bearing in mind that they are competing with other job seekers with higher
qualifications than themselves, they find it very tough and in dire need of a
jobs which are not forthcoming. The world today is rapidly changing and many
jobs require education qualification beyond high school. Going to college
therefore gives one the cutting edge in the job market. I joined college not
because I did not get a job after high school; in fact I got a job as a
procurement clerk which did pay nice package. I joined college so that I could
expand my horizons in promotion and increase my chances of earning more steady
income and change my life, and therefore had positive reasons.
After
high school, I had good results to enable me join a reputable college but lack
of college fees propelled me to seek for employment so that I could increase my
chances of joining college. College education is very expensive for an orphan
like me who had no guardian to pay the fees after high school. That did not erase
my hope of joining college and pursue my dream of taking up management course. Luckily
enough, with help of a friend, I landed for a job as a procurement clerk. The
pay was not bad at all but with my high school level of education I did not see
myself achieving a higher managerial position in the company rather than just
being a clerk. According to the culture of the company I was working for, an employee
could not get a scholarship from the company unless he or she had worked for
more than six years. This in my personal view was a long time earning peanuts
while I should have by the end of that period have finished college and lining
up for promotion to senior position. To be liable for promotions into higher
managerial positions I had to have proper credentials and I was going to get
them no matter what cost.
I had enough to
register for college and pay one year after working for about one year six
month thanks to my plan of saving most of the salary. I resigned from being a procurement
clerk and began searching for a college. Having enough money to register and
more so pay for one academic year was the most helpful thing that happened to
me. Most colleges need a student to pay fees in full especially for the first
academic year. I passed this test with flying colors and was accepted in a
reputable college for a Bachelor in Business management. I’m now in the start
of last year having secured bursaries and grants to pay my fees. As a student
for the three academic years, not only am I close to accomplishing my career
dream but also have met and made friends with student from different families
and with varied cultural backgrounds. The social interaction with these
students has been a plus in my life because it has been preparing me to work as
a team player with people of different cultural backgrounds. I have indeed
found out that in college I cannot be tied down by cultural barriers but earned
a reputation of social to all and leader beyond borders. Interaction with other
college students has been different from that of high school which has further
broadened by social ladder.
College life has
had its challenges. My uncle under whose cares I have looked up for upkeep had been
hailing from pneumonia which caused him to stop going to work also needed my
attention. I had to take after-class jobs to ensure I had the upkeep money.
Keep a balance between working and learning has not been a easy chore but I
have tried to adapt quite well scoring above average in my course examinations.
I would like to party with my college friends but only occasionally. That is
because it has been my principle since high school to live within my means. It
is my hope that with the effort I have been putting in learning and managing my
meager money, I will make a good manager having graduated with proper
credentials in management.
To sum up, one can
always live up to his dream by working through hook or crook to achieve the set
goals in life. I always wanted to be a manager but there have been many
drawbacks in my education, at times blurring my vision in my aspirations, but
with zeal and zest, I’m close to making my dream come true. That’s why I am in
college.
